2003 APR 9 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The Bush administration wants to spend $100 million to work toward vaccines to shield Americans from global outbreaks of new flu strains.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson told senators the money could help avoid an outbreak such as the one that occurred in 1918 and killed 25 million people worldwide, including 500,000 in the United States.

"The recent cases of what has been called severe acute respiratory syndrome remind us all of the potential danger posed by emerging infectious diseases, especially a possible new influenza strain," Thompson said. "If we wait until a pandemic begins, it may be too late to act to minimize the loss of life in our country and across the world."
