AMD, Fujitsu to merge chip production.

A joint venture to merge the flash memory production of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Fujitsu Ltd. by September will become the world's second-largest producer, the Japanese company said Tuesday, April 1.

Fujitsu now ranks fifth in the fast-growing flash memory market while Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD is fourth.

Fujitsu spokesman Robert Pomeroy said combining the companies' capacities would put them ahead of South Korea's Samsung Electronics Ltd., the current No. 2.

Salomon Smith Barney Inc. advised AMD on the venture, in which the U.S. company will hold a 60% stake. Credit Suisse First Boston advised …
