2002 marks the 125th birthday of Herman Hesse, the world's most widely read 20th century German writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. He was the author of "Siddliartha," "Steppenwolf' and many other books. His philosophy of humanitarianism and his maxim "be yourself' had a big influence on American youth during the 1960s.
