2003 APR 2 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Several HIV vaccine candidates cause a high rate of false positive test results, researchers in the United States warn.
"Since 1987, more than 10,000 individuals worldwide have received immunizations with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preventive vaccine constructs," according to Marta-Louise Ackers and colleagues at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and Brisbane, California-based VaxGen Inc.
A number of these potential vaccines cause the production of antibodies that mark their carrier as seropositive, Ackers and coauthors said.
The researchers examined the rate of false-positive test results in a group of 461 healthy vaccine trial participants. More than 20% of serum samples from these individuals tested positive on at least one of six enzyme immunoassays and rapid serological screens, study data showed.
