TAMPA, Fla. -- CHECKERS DRIVE-IN RESTAURANTS INC. posted a fourth-quarter loss of $9.7 million after charges of $10.8 million related to asset write-downs and store closings. The company, which operates and franchises 398 Checkers and 386 Rally's drive-thrus, had reported year-ago quarterly profits of $23 million. Excluding the charges, Checkers earned $1.1 million in the quarter ended Dec. 30, vs. S3.9 million in the prior year's fourth quarter. Checkers posted a fourth-quarter revenue rise of 5 percent to $53.5 million. The company's net loss for fiscal 2002 was $1.7 million, vs. prior-year net income of $4.3 million.
