Cheyenne, age 6, is reading The Runaway Bunny from her booster seat in the back of the car. We are driving through some of the most gorgeous landscapes in New England, but she won't look up at the horses in corrals, the red barn, the acres of corn, the Carter Range purple in the distance. She is engaged with silent G--a mighty foe. Try sounding out high (ha i g ha); the word does not clap together like air after lightning, and Margaret Wise Brown does not let it go at that. Helped through high, Cheyenne is tangled up in tightrope, a compound word, and silent G is the walker losing her balance.
