A school-by-school look at the Clark County School District's 2002 graduation rates shows the bottom line isn't as grim as it was in 2001.
In 2001, district statistics showed only 45 percent of the seniors at Desert Pines High School earned a diploma, the lowest graduation rate in Clark County. But in 2002, after a concerted effort to raise student performance, Desert Pines succeeded in graduating 60 percent of its senior class.
It's a figure Principal Roger Jacks is planning to improve with additional efforts to help students pass Nevada's mandatory proficiency exam and earn any required credits they might be lacking.
