Strong entertainment sales for Asda helped parent company Wal-Mart's fourth quarter net income soar by 16% to $2.53bn (1.58bn [pounds sterling]).

The US retail giant, which is a leading contender to take over Safeway, last Tuesday revealed its UK's operation's general merchandise sales--including entertainment--rose "in the mid 20s" in the three months to the end of January.
