The German pharmaceutical company Schering AG has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for Yasmin, its low-dose, monophasic oral contraceptive.

According to Schering Yasmin is the only birth control pill to contain the progestin drospirenone in addition to ethinylestradiol. The company claims that drospirenone can counteract oestrogen-based water retention in the body.
