The crop that came in from the cold
Like a teenager whose hormones have shifted into overdrive, southwest Florida's citrus industry is in a growth spurt...bounding to more acreage, higher yields, and greater prominence every year.
The primary reason for this boom? Traditional strongholds for Florida citrus have been frozen back by powerful Arctic cold fronts several times in the 1980s, while the Gulf Coast citrus region has safely ridden out the big chills. Industry insiders say this more temperate tendency will be the spur to continue this region's impressive growth for years to come.
