Scott Dixon barely drew attention in testing for the 2003 IRL season. His switch to Tony George's league was something of an afterthought in light of the similar moves Michael Andretti, Dario Franchitti, Kenny Brack and Tony Kanaan made. Even his Ganassi Racing teammate Tomas Scheckter overshadowed him. Then Dixon qualified 12th among the 21 entries last weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
But there was no denying the speed the 22-year-old New Zealander had in the season opener. He drew alongside leader Gil de Ferran while decelerating on pit road of the final stop and blew by the two-time CART champion when the Target crew delivered a masterful stop.
From there, Dixon was on his way to the win in his first IRL start.
Dixon admitted being caught off guard by the win. A road racing specialist, he scored his only CART win at another oval track, Nazareth Speedway, in 2001 because his team managed the fuel game just right. Even Sunday, he didn't have one of the best seven cars in the first half of the race before finding himself behind only de Ferran and Helio Castroneves just past the halfway point. That's when it hit him: He could win.
It wasn't long before he dispatched Castroneves and set sail for de Ferran, who led a race-high 92 laps. His eyes lit up, and so did de Ferran's, when Roger Penske relayed a ``Dixon, P2'' warning.
