A record number of inadequate schools has Clark County School District officials marshaling plans for improved student achievement.

The Nevada Department of Education announced its annual school designations on Monday. In Clark County, 30 schools were put on the state's low-performing list, including 29 district schools and one charter school. It's the highest number of inadequate schools ever to be identified in the district. Superintendent Carlos Garcia predicted the blow in December, when preliminary results of October student testing were tallied.

"We have work to do," Garcia said Monday. "One can see things anyway one would like. We had about 211 schools that were meeting or exceeding expectations. Thirty of our schools have been designated as needing improvement. That's about 12 percent of our schools."

In 2002, the district had only four inadequate schools. Two factors contribute to the drastic increase, Garcia said. The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills replaced the TerraNova test, which Nevada has used for the previous six years. Changes in testing…
