2003 MAR 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Researchers at PowderJet Vaccines, Inc., have announced that hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigen can be delivered as a powdered formulation to the skin and generate an effective immune system response.
"We have previously shown that epidermal powder immunization with a powdered inactivated influenza virus vaccine, by targeting the Langerhans cell-rich epidermis, was more efficacious than deeper tissue injection using a needle and syringe," said Jorge E. Osorio and colleagues of PowderJet Vaccines, Inc., which is located in Madison, Wisconsin.
According to Osorio's group, epidermal power immunization with HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), even when unconjugated with adjuvant, yielded a strong humoral and cellular response comparable to that of needle and syringe administration into the muscle.
When conjugated with CpG oligonucleotides, HBV epidermal power immunization was even more effective, researchers said. Antibody response, T helper cell activity, and cytokine secretion increased as a result of oligonucleotide conjugation (Immune responses to hepatitis B surface ...
