2003 Mercedes-Benz S500 4Matic

Date in fleet: Feb. 10-24 As-tested price: $86,265 Powertrain: 5.0-liter V8; awd, five-speed automatic Hp: 302 @ 5600 rpm Torque: 339 @ 2700-4250 rpm Curb weight: 4390 pounds MPG (AW observed/EPA combined): 16.5/18.7

HART: Question: Is this the best sedan money can buy? I think it is and here's why:

The powertrain is buttery-smooth, from cruising around town to triple digits. The car feels solid, like a chunk of steel, yet it handles relatively nimbly for a car this size. Steering is nicely weighted, and the suspension smooths out even the most frost-heaved pavement around. The doors have some heft and give you a nice ``thunk'' when you close them. The 302-hp V8 does a fine job of pulling the 4400-pound car; it's not lightning-quick, but you don't have to worry when making those passes on two-lanes either. And the 4Matic assures that you make it through the slippery stuff.

The exterior design of the S is instantly recognizable as a Mercedes, but inside is where it really shines. The door-mounted seat controls are the best in the business, and the seats themselves are comfortable and highly configurable. The cabin is extremely quiet with little wind noise. And Mercedes has even made the COMAND center a little more user-friendly.

MORRISON: I agree with Roger, the S500 is the leader in the ultra-luxo-boat segment. The Q45 and LS 430 just don't give you the same ego boost. And do I even have to mention the disaster that is the 7 Series? I think not. The BMW may drive a bit nicer, but that's more than canceled out by its hideous styling and asinine i-Drive. I wish the S500's styling excited me more, but it looks decent enough. The interior is fantastic, however: The seat travel is amazing, the seats themselves are outrageously comfortable and the materials-from the leather to the wood trim-are top-notch. And this thing gets up and goes. The brakes also impressed me (I like the cross-drilled front discs), and the chassis and suspension soak up bumps with no problem. Yep, if you're lucky enough to have the bank to afford this car, you'll be pleased with your purchase.
