Herbert crashes a Bentley
The second of Bentley's brand-new Le Mans contenders has been seriously damaged in testing. Brit Johnny Herbert crashed the EXP Speed 8 at Jerez, Spain on the fourth day of testing at the venue. The damage was significant enough for the car to return to Team Bentley's headquarters for a ``thorough investigation.'' Speculation is the chassis is a write-off. The crash, which Herbert walked away from, came at the end of the first proper run for the 2003 Bentley, which faced poor weather in previous tests at England's Snetterton racetrack and at Vallelunga in Spain. The two cars, with five of the six Team Bentley pilots driving, completed about 1500 miles. Herbert crashed after setting Bentley's best test time at the end of a low-fuel tank run. Driver error is credited for the accident. The remaining Bentley was slated to run at Paul Ricard in the South of France on Sunday and Monday, but snow limited it to a dozen laps before the team packed it in.
Turkey's on the table
FIA president Max Mosley says the Rally of Turkey is a go as planned Feb. 28 to March 2, despite the possibility of war in neighboring Iraq. The event is in the World Rally Championship for the first time. Mosley said, ``I've had several conversations with the Turkish Motorsport Federation and looked at every situation very carefully. They can see absolutely no basis for anyone to be worried.''
