The December 2001 decision that Palm Inc. handheld electronic organizers using a certain writing recognition software infringed a Xerox Corp. patent has been affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

In April 1997, Xerox sued U.S. Robotics (the company was later acquired by 3Com then spun off as Palm Inc.) asserting that the handwriting recognition technology marketed as Graffiti and used in Palm handheld devices infringed a Xerox patent received on January 21, 1997. The "Unistrokes" technology was invented at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center.
