VW in F1?
The saga continues: Volkswagen's long-rumored Formula One participation has team owner Peter Sauber raising his hand in any plans. He told German newspaper Die Welt, ``We [Sauber and VW] have not been negotiating in detail but we are holding preliminary talks. It is always useful to have the backing of a manufacturer. The high cost demands such cooperations.''
Panoz goes private
A new team will mastermind Don Panoz's attack on the American Le Mans Series this year: JML Team Panoz is a new operation set up by veteran British engineer John McLoughlin. The team is being billed as a privateer effort in line with the scaled-down operation Audi is running this year. JML will run a pair of last year's LMP-01 Evos. Former Chrysler driver Olivier Beretta is expected to be confirmed as the team's lead driver within the next week.
Lehto sticks around
Former Cadillac driver JJ Lehto will stay in the ALMS after signing up to race with the Champion Audi team in 2003. Lehto, who was a casualty of Cadillac's decision to ax its sports car program, will contest the full season in the Champion's customer R8 prototype. He will team up with Johnny Herbert in all the races, except the season opener at Sebring next month, and also contest the Le Mans 24 Hours. Audi contract driver Emanuele Pirro was also in contention for the drive, but the team owner opted to sign Lehto when it became unclear whether the 2001 ALMS champion would be used by the Joest team in 2003.
