There were plenty of grease-stained faces in the crowd when the Vintage Auto Racing Association staged its fourth annual pre-season tech inspection and car show at Irwindale Speed-way last month. Not so unusual at a racetrack, except these faces were the work of one Mimi the clown, on hand to help VARA celebrate its 30th birthday.
Mimi's face-painting stand was part of a midway that included booths hawking model cars, posters, books and other automotive-related wares plus a play area for kids. Of course, it was the big kids' play area that occupied the most territory in Irwindale's parking lot. The size of these toys didn't exactly delineate the men from the boys, judging by drivers whose grizzled cheeks were sporting checkered flags or their car's number in sparkly rouge a la Mimi.
Event coordinator Murray Chalmers had the 200-plus cars grouped by their respective racing classes, making it easier for both tech inspectors and any potential VARA racers in the general public to scope things out.
