2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited

Date in fleet: Dec. 18-Jan. 3 As-tested price: $38,412 Powertrain: 3.8-liter V6; 4wd, five-speed automatic Hp: 215 @ 5500 rpm Torque: 248 @ 3250 rpm Curb weight: 4784 pounds AW mpg: 11.97

FLOYD: This big ol' petrol sucker has monster room, it's loaded with amenities, and it has character. But you're probably not getting me into this for the price. A 4Runner, Explorer, Pathfinder, yes, even TrailBlazer are better overall in my mind in that price range, though it seems like Montero has a size advantage over most of its SUV brethren. It also has some really goofy front fenders, but you remember them for sure. The interior is sharp, and I like the gauge setup. But its tall stance makes the Montero feel unbalanced to me, like it's not planted to the road. Maybe this feeling comes from the seating position, which gives you an almost ``too high over the road'' feel. Overall it's a pretty decent vehicle, but not likely the one at the top of the list after the comparison-shopping is done.

WILSON: I'd have sworn this thing cost over $40,000 and weighed over 5000 pounds. Wrong on both counts, though on a bucks-per-pound basis, I guess it works out about the same. This is a heavy hauler for folks who need cargo space. It would not be my choice if life circumstances demanded (as if ever they did for anyone) that an SUV be used as a daily commuter. It's one of those things that always seem to be perched precariously atop the road in some sort of high-wire balancing act. Monsteros have been more tall than wide for quite a while; it's a pity we don't get the more compact (though not tiny) three-door Pajeros that convert to Paris-Dakar Rally-Raid stars.

NEFF: The Montero's shape, looking straight on at the front end, is suggestive of what I won't put in print. Let's just say Freud would be proud. I didn't enjoy driving the Montero, mostly because of its unwieldy weight, sloooooow steering and high center of gravity. But I did appreciate it, for a couple of reasons. When I needed to plow through 30 miles of freshly fallen snow to get to a hospital ...
