Various obituaries for Fiat patriarch Gianni Agnelli are spiced with words such as ``stylish,'' ``dominating'' and ``end of an era.'' The cliches are warranted for the man credited with turning the company into a global powerhouse.

Agnelli ruled Fiat for six decades, becoming managing director in 1963 of the company his grandfather founded in 1899. One of his biggest moments came in 1966 when, as newly appointed chairman, he orchestrated a joint venture between Fiat and Russian automaker AutoVAZ, where Russia got a car plant capable of producing 660,000 cars a year.
