2003 FEB 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- By using mouse models, E.U.-funded DEPROHEALTH-project has demonstrated that some Lactobacillus strains can have a beneficial effect on intestinal inflammations and infections.
The target disease in these mouse studies has been inflammation of bowel. The strains that are most promising produce fair levels of murine, which is the effective compound in preventing the inflammation caused by the bacteria. Four most promising beneficial probiotic strains have been selected for future studies. These studies will test the effect of these strains in living mice, and also in humans in the future.
Finding the effective bacteria has required a lot of background work. The research started with examining a number of wild strains of lactobacilli to find out about their potential capacity to interact with the host immune system.
