Voters next week will elect four members to the seven-person Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute Governing Board. Here is background information to aid readers with their decisions.

Voters will go to the polls on Feb. 4 to elect Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute Governing Board members in Districts 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Four candidates are vying for the District 2 seat, two candidates each are competing for Districts 3 and 4, and, while voters in District 6 will find two names on their ballots, one of the candidates has dropped out. Candidate profiles, listed by ballot position, follow. They include biographical sketches and brief statements from the candidates.

District 2

Louis H. "Herb" Pitts

Retired from Sandia National Laboratories, Pitts has been active on TVI's Foundation Board, serving three terms and heading the group as president from 1994 to 1996. He also has been board president for Share Your Care, Hogares and United Way of Central New Mexico.

His statement: "I believe in TVI's mission and the institution's emphasis on the student. I have seen the effect that TVI has had on people's lives, and I think that my business experience and community involvement can be put to good use on the governing board to make TVI even stronger. I know the quality of education that TVI provides, as a result of the graduates that we have hired at Sandia National Labs, and I am quite favorably impressed.
