City needs to play fair on new growth panel

People learn quickly, even as kids, the rowdy consequences of changing the rules in the middle of a game. At the least, the turncoat is angrily tagged a "cheater." At the worst, he's gang-booted off the field.

Mayor Martin Chavez and the City Council are poised on Wednesday to change the rules in the tense and highly consequential game of managing the city's growth. As the kids might put it: They'd better not or else.

Smart-growth advocates from 1000 Friends of New Mexico are justifiably concerned about appointments the mayor has proposed for a new Planned Growth Strategy Task Force.
