On Jan. 9 Porsche announced that Fred Schwab, who has served for 11 years as president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, will step down March 1 after 18 years with the company's U.S. arm.
We caught up with Porsche's outgoing prez for a quick chat:
AW: Why leave now?
Schwab: It's just time. This job is for a younger person. The pressure is high-it's been high for years. The dealers are ready, we have a new dealer agreement in place, the staff at the headquarters in Atlanta is in great shape and we're entering a new era with the Cayenne.
AW: What led to your decision? Any connection to the flap over Boxster ``incentives'' for Porsche Club members that was criticized by Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking last summer?
Schwab: Not at all-there's absolutely no animosity. I'm going to help [incoming CEO] Peter [Schwarzenbauer] with the transition. We began discussing it in October and we agreed at Thanksgiving. We didn't announce it at the Detroit show because we didn't want to overshadow the Cayenne's debut.
AW: Hit some of your highlights.
