Nissan put three finalists on the podium for North American Car and Truck of the Year, yet walked away empty-handed as a panel of 49 automotive journalists selected the BMW Mini Cooper/Cooper S for top car honors and bestowed the best truck award on the Volvo XC90.
Mini received 253 points, while the runner-up G35 from Nissan's uplevel Infiniti division received 210 points. The third-place finisher, the Nissan 350Z, garnered 191 points. Nissan officials were left to wonder whether their wealth of product split the vote and cost them the win, but jurors were clearly divided between the two strong entrants from the same Japanese automaker that claimed last year's top car prize with its new Altima.
Either way, Mini general manager Jack Pitney was all smiles: ``You say split, I say sweep.''
Journalists whittled the field down to the three finalists from a field of 12 car candidates. The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding vehicles of the year on criteria such as innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.
Juror John Rettie applauded the Mini for succeeding to ``create a small car that stands out from the crowd, is fun to drive [and is] functional and safe.''
