Porsche quickest
The best of the Porsche-powered FABCARs came out on top in the first head-to-head clash of the new Daytona Prototypes. David Donohue topped the times in one of Brumos Racing's pair of entries in the traditional official test organized prior to the Daytona 24-hour. He shaded the GTS-class Chevrolet Corvette driven by Justin Bell by just over half a second. The solo G&W-run Picchio-BMW was second best of the Daytona prototypes, a further half-second behind. The second Brumos car was third fastest.
`Indy cars' back with IRL
The new-look Indy Racing League really got a new look Jan. 7 when CEO Tony George unveiled an updated logo to reflect the reacquisition of the Indy car moniker, which had been in CART's possession since the mid-1990s. The IRL's top division, which will have even more former CART participants in 2003, shall now be known as the ``IndyCar'' series. The junior division remains the ``Infiniti Pro Series.'' Clearly missing from the IndyCar logo is any reference to a title sponsor, which George apparently does not have for a second straight year. Such financial arrangements have not been the IRL's strong suit: Remember that Pep Boys and Northern Light have come and gone.
