In our book, Volkswagens are among the most esteemed cars for their overall performance, value and smartness. That said, we have some issues with VW's flagship W8, here for a yearlong evaluation.
Almost everyone has complained this quarter about throttle lag. One editor says it's enough of a dog that he finds himself hesitating to join traffic he normally runs with in lesser cars. Other staffers also point to the W8's lack of off-the-line oomph, but one says it's better than his own A6 4.2 and that it has a better sound than the Audi to boot. We'll have it checked out, but it's probably something we have to learn to live with.
Tipping the scales at nearly 4000 pounds, the W8 weighs 300 pounds more than a 4Motion, six-cylinder-equipped Passat, and you really feel that weight when pushing it through corners.
For a luxury-leaning car, the limited amount of space available for incidentals in the W8's front seat is a little disappointing. The center tunnel holds next to nothing and the console is tiny.
