2003 JAN 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- MedMira, Inc., (MIR) announced that it has reached a collaboration venture with a Canadian biopharmaceutical company, Cangene Corp. (CNJ), which will facilitate MedMira in reaching the global market for detection of the protective antibodies against smallpox following vaccination.

The smallpox vaccine consists of a live vaccinia virus which produces an immune defense to smallpox infection in humans. The traditional method for determining the success of vaccination against smallpox was a subjective observation of the presence of a lesion or scar by a healthcare professional.

The gold standard laboratory test, the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), has been used to determine the ability of the antibodies to neutralize the infectivity of the virus in an individual following vaccination. This technique, however, is very involved and time ...
