2003 JAN 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Colorado hasn't seen a case of smallpox since 1949, but 53 years later, the state is preparing a plan to vaccinate hundreds of health care workers who could vaccinate the public in the event of a bioterrorism attack.
The plans were due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on December 9, 2002, but Colorado was granted a 4-day extension because the CDC didn't finish its training there until near the deadline.
"This is being done strictly as a precautionary measure," said Dr. Ned Calonge, the state's chief medical officer.
