In response to the challenges posed by the use of multilingual domain names on the Internet, WIPO, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) staged a joint symposium in Geneva on December 6-7, 2001. Legal, technical, and government representatives from more than 60 countries participated in the seminar.
A statement issued by the two organizations reported that, by the year 2003, approximately two-thirds of Internet users will be non-English speakers. One UN agency cited a report that stated that by 2007, Chinese will be the most widely used language on the World Wide Web.
