You've probably noticed that the colder weather can be especially harsh on your skin. As a dermatologist, I want to explain why this phenomenon occurs, and what you can do about it.
Your skin depends on moisture to remain hydrated and healthy. In winter months, the combination of lower temperatures and reduced humidity extracts moisture directly from your skin. In fact, the relative humidity usually drops below 30%, making it more difficult for your skin to maintain its ideal level of moisture. In turn, skin lipids, which form the barrier that keeps moisture in and skin soft and healthy, decline by approximately 40%.
When the natural moisture evaporates from the top layer of skin (which is no thicker than a sheet of paper), it often results in drier, redder, flakier, itchier and older-looking skin.
Hopefully, this guide will help you adapt your personal skin care routine for the coming months.
SYMPTOMS OF WINTER SKIN:
DRY SKIN
During winter, the dry air literally sucks the moisture out of your skin. In fact, the incidence of dry skin almost doubles in winter compared to summer.
