There are times we feel we have the greatest job in the world. Yes, we get to drive great cars in wonderful places. But that's not the best part. The best part is getting to know the people who drive this whole hobby, passion, obsession. Car people are special people. We don't just like to think so; we know it.
One of these people is Myron Vernis, whom we first met in his capacity as general manager of the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio, which, every September, stages the Glenmoor Gathering, one of the nicest little concours around. Vernis has a passion that shows both in his cars and in his approach to collecting: in a word, connoisseurship. Vernis has this thing right, and his story is one all collectors can identify with and aspire to.
Vernis will be the first to tell you he is no zillionaire-he has amassed his impressive car collection only through research, exhaustive searches and careful horse trading. A lifelong car nut, after a painful experience with a tatty E-Type as a college freshman, he switched to a '63 Porsche coupe, which he still owns. Now 47, he has a passion for all things Porsche, and a thorough schooling in the breed.
Of the dozen or so Porsche 597s known to exist, Vernis has three. Also, seven Porsche tractors, loads of Porsche industrial equipment, several Speedsters and the first 911 cabriolet prototype (1964).
