Will officials ever learn?
Every state has sunshine laws, but there always seem to be public officials who want to keep the curtains drawn. Just a sampling of recent alarms reaching my desk:
* The Kansas Supreme Court denied the request of six state press groups for release of the transcript of a hearing in a sensational murder trial.
* Three recent court decisions in Minnesota are threatening that state's national reputation for openness in government. The Minnesota Newspaper Association is marshalling forces to combat the impact of the rulings.
* The county school board in Mobile, Alabama, went into executive session January 26 to discuss attorney's fees in a discrimination suit. The local SPJ chapter has asked the district attorney to determine whether that was a violation of the state's open-meetings law.
