Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has praised the efforts of His Majesty the Sultan's Government in agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Talking from Rome to the Oman News Agency, he said, the Omani government sought to create a socially and economically important role for members of the Omani community who mostly live in rural areas.

He further added that as a result of official development efforts the two sectors managed to contribute products worth $400 million in the late nineties; up from $44 million in 1970.
