Johannesburg, 29 August: Lots of sugar was spilled in Sandton on Thursday [29 August], but the reason behind this symbolic gesture leaves producers in countries like South Africa and Mozambique with a bitter taste in the mouth.

Lobbyists from Oxfam International, a confederation of agencies working in 120 developing countries, heaped the British contents of thousands of sugar sachets on a map of Africa, added 40 pounds more and then sprinkled pink sugar crystals on top.

This happened at a restaurant near the Sandton Convention Centre where the World Summit of Sustainable Development [WSSD] is being held. …
