All Black pivot Andrew Mehrtens could stay with Canterbury after next year's World Cup, but he would like to play at Northampton for former coach Wayne Smith if he does take up a contract in England.

Mehrtens, 29, confirmed to the Guardian newspaper in England that he would stay with Smith, his former Crusaders and All Black coach, next week after the All Blacks break camp in Cardiff at the end of their three-match European tour.

"Wayne is a good friend of mine and it will be good to catch up with him again," Mehrtens said. "I have not decided what I will do after the World Cup when my (New Zealand Rugby Union) contract …
