WHEN "new" art surfaced in Baguio in the late '80s, it was met with skepticism.

"It cannot be understood," went most of the comments. A media person said he would rather write about planting mangoes than art, so farmers could benefit from his column.

Art is about ideas. Art is communication. Artists communicate ideas through color and texture. If an artist paints a mango, he is showing how a mango feels, its form, its essence. But he will not explain how a mango grows. …
