Native American young women who become pregnant during their teenage years face numerous challenges. In the group facilitated by Cheryl American Horse, six young women shared their experiences as mothers: what happened during their pregnancies, the reactions from their families when they learned they were pregnant, and the issues of being in school, relationships with family, financial survival, and parenting.

They also explored the reasons why they became teenage mothers. They said their parents were alcoholics and one of the young women stated that she suffered from physical violence at a young age. Several of the participants said that as young children, they ...
