Dear Colleagues,

On April 12-13, 1996, the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center convened the Dakota Roundtable III to bring young Native women together who represented a cross section of the Native American community to address the status of young Native women.

The report that came out of the Dakota Roundtable III, The Status of Young Native American Women, will assist health care professionals, states officials, federal officials, tribal leadership, community activists, and foundations alike in their efforts to improve the status of young Native women.

In as much as this report reflects the efforts of community participants of the Aberdeen area (North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska), it could also be used as a model for other areas.

The following are points that may assist us in reaching our goals:

* Recognize that young Native women have important roles in their communities, especially among their peers;

* Recognize the need to broaden the definition of community leadership beyond federal, state, and tribal ...
