On February 3rd, 1999, The Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center (referred to as the Resource Center) conducted a focus group composed of women from the Native American community in the Aberdeen area of South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. The group included 8-women, ranging in ages from 18-37 years, and represented six different Lakota and Dakota Nations. All of the women use Indian Health Service (I.H.S.) as their primary care provider and were asked to attend the focus group in order to share their experiences of I.H.S. reproductive health services.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's), reproductive tract infections (RTI's) and malignant neoplasms are endemic to the Native American community. The Aberdeen service area has some of the highest rates in the country of STD's, RTI's, and reproductive related cancers. Thousands of Native American women suffer unnecessarily from preventable conditions and complications. While I.H.S. continues to make yearly improvement efforts in its services, Native American women from the Aberdeen area retain the lowest health status in the country. Only dramatic changes within I.H.S. and the community will enable Native American women to foresee healthy lifestyles and longevity for their children and grandchildren (see Present Health Status Indicators, page 5). Adjusting protocol and services can successfully lessen the impact of preventable diseases and complications.

The Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center was opened in 1988 to address, community issues, including reproductive health, for which local resources were non-existent, and to provide an outlet for community members to voice their concerns. Since then, the Resource Center has researched and produced documents on AIDS, diabetes, fetal alcohol syndrome, domestic violence, and the use of Norplant and Depo-Provera and others, distributed information on subjects including STD's, breast feeding, cervical cancer, breast cancer prevention and others, and conducted three Roundtables concerning young people's and women's issues within the Native American community. This work continues with the present inquiry into I.H.S. delivery of services.

Because the perspective of patients using I.H.S. is crucial, a focus group was the best method to explore issues surrounding ...
