SARASOTA -- Sarasota Republican Donna Clarke will try to hold off challenges from two opponents to win her second term as a state representative.

Democrat Ken Shelin, chairman of the city of Sarasota Planning Board, and Libertarian Bill Van Allen, a flower salesman, also are competing for the House seat, which represents most of northern Sarasota County and the Whitfield neighborhood in southern Manatee County.

If she's re-elected, Clarke wants to loosen state restrictions on how school districts spend money and make it easier for districts to plan and build new schools.
