2002 DEC 19 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Nutritional scientists in Canada report that when they added 10% flaxseed to the diet of mice with human breast tumors, tumor growth and metastases were reduced.
"Angiogenesis is important in tumor growth, progression, and metastatic dissemination. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one key factor in promotion of breast cancer angiogenesis. VEGFs are bioactive in the extracellular space where they become available to the endothelial cells," wrote C. Dabrosin and colleagues, University of Toronto.
"Phytoestrogens such as lignans have been shown to alter breast cancer incidence and be cancer-protective in rats," the researchers said. They noted the same results their study using nude mice with established human breast tumors.
Dabrosin's group found "supplementation of 10% flaxseed, the richest source of mammalian lignans, to [the mice] reduced tumor growth and metastasis. Moreover, flaxseed decreased extracellular ...
