"Approximately 10% of the general population worldwide acquires influenza infection every year," reported Maria S.A.G. Mixeu and colleagues at the Ruben Berta Foundation in Sao Paulo, Brazil. "Airline crews run a particularly high risk of contracting influenza and influenza-like viruses because they come in contact with hundreds of potentially infected individuals every day."
Mixeu and her associates conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 813 healthy volunteers working for a Brazilian airline. The investigators randomly assigned the participants to receive an injection of either a trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine or a placebo. Follow-up was conducted 7 months after vaccine or placebo injection.
