The Food and Drug Administration has not yet made final a two-year-old proposal for voluntary biotech labeling, but it has taken action against label claims that imply products are superior because they are made without bioengineered ingredients.

In voluntary biotech labeling guidance proposed early last year, FDA said non-biotech products should not be labeled as "GM free" or "GMO free." Such terms could lead consumers to believe that foods are especially made to avoid transgenic material and are safer or superior to their competitive counterparts, the agency said.
