Gazprom's board of directors has reactivated plans for a $3bn project to build a north European gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea to Germany. But some observers see Gazprom's interest as little more than a strategy to put pressure on states currently handling Russian gas in transit to European destinations.
The company's board of directors decided this week to move forward with the Baltic pipeline on the strength of a feasibility study prepared in 1999 by NordTransGas, a joint venture set up by Gazprom and Finland's Fortum.
