I think back on my days of sipping Darjeeling tea on the verandah of the Gall Face hotel in Colombo, Ceylon, a half-century ago: I couldn't possibly do that now in Sri Lanka!

There ought to be a law against trying to pronounce the name of a city the way the natives do. Find me a Frenchman who can say Des Plaines, Illinois!
Mr. Nordlinger says a man has a right to pronounce his personal name any way he wants; I feel the same about places. The natives of San Jose, Ill., pronounce it "San Josie." Their town, their right.
