WASHINGTON -- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is offering technical assistance to physicians who missed the Oct. 15 compliance deadline for federal electronic transactions standards under the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act.
On Oct. 15, Karen Trudel, director of the HIPAA project staff at CMS, told this newspaper that nearly 500,000 covered entities had submitted compliance plans to receive extensions to the compliance date. Nationwide, 2 million entities perform electronic transactions that would be considered covered entities under HIPAA.
"There are people out there we think we should have heard from," another CMS spokesperson said.
Covered entities that did not file for an extension by Oct. 15 can no longer do so. Those who were granted an extension have until Oct. 15, 2003, to become compliant.
