We're still debating the X-Type's overall ``Jaguar-ness,'' but the optional Sport Package certainly raises the baby Jag's game. Sport seats and wood veneer interior trim are nice touches, while tuned springs, dampers and antiroll bars eliminate the standard car's floaty feel. Combined with the 3.0-liter's 231 hp, the suspension changes transform the X-Type from soft boulevardier to something resembling a driver's car. It's hard for us to accept an automatic gearbox in anything purporting to be a sport model, but the speed and smoothness of our test car's tranny surprised more than one driver. With the package's dynamic stability control, snow-covered roads will fear you-if you can stomach exposing your baby to the elements, that is.
