2002 DEC 5 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Troglitazone therapy prevented or deferred the development of type 2 diabetes in Hispanic women with insulin resistance, according to researchers in the U.S.
"Type 2 diabetes frequently results from progressive failure of pancreatic beta-cell function in the presence of chronic insulin resistance," explained Thomas A Buchanan and colleagues at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. "We tested whether chronic amelioration of insulin resistance would preserve pancreatic beta-cell function and delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes in high-risk Hispanic women."
The investigators randomly assigned 266 Hispanic women who had had gestational diabetes to receive either 400 mg/day troglitazone (n=133) or a placebo (n=133) for a median duration of 30 months. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT) and oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were performed periodically to monitor the women for the development of diabetes.
Among the 236 women who remained in the study, those in the troglitazone group were significantly less likely than those taking placebo to develop type 2 diabetes (5.4% vs. 12.1%, respectively; p
