Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - A meta-analysis of 26 studies indicated that a previous Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination affects the results of tuberculin skin tests and must be taken into account when making recommendations about treatment for a possible latent tuberculosis infection.
"Uncertainty about the effect of BCG vaccination on tuberculin skin testing and the strength with which recommendations are made to individual patients regarding treatment of latent tuberculosis infection have identified a need to analyze the available data on the effect of BCG on skin testing," said L. Wang and colleagues at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. "A meta-analysis of the evidence for the effect of BCG vaccination on tuberculin skin testing in subjects without active tuberculosis was therefore performed."
The investigators reviewed 370 full-text articles from which they chose 26 to include in the analysis (A meta-analysis of the effect of Bacille Calmette Guerin vaccination on tuberculin skin test measurements. Thorax, 2002;57(9):804-809).
Articles were chosen only if they reported results from prospective studies that included a control group and involved patients who received tuberculin skin tests more than 5 years after BCG vaccination.
Analysis revealed that patients who had received a BCG vaccination were 2.1 times more likely to have a positive tuberculin skin test. However, the strength of the vaccination effect decreased ...
